Danny Welbeck needed oxygen on the pitch before being stretchered off during Arsenal’s Europa League clash with Sporting Lisbon on Thursday night.

The striker suffered what seems to be a serious ankle injury towards the end of the first half at the Emirates when he landed awkwardly from a header.

Welbeck was trying to meet Stephan Lichtsteiner’s cross and was rolling around in pain after he hit the deck.

The forward’s right leg was strapped up by medics, and worried teammates gathered around the striker, clearly looking concerned.

Midfielder Matteo Guendouzi in particular looked distraught for his fellow Gunner, who then needed oxygen.

The 27-year-old was replaced Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Welbeck was making just his sixth start of the season and had been linked with a January move away from the club.

Crystal Palace were reportedly interested, but any transfer will now be put on hold.

The injury is just the latest in Welbeck’s career, as the Englishman has suffered set-back after set-back.
